Build the desk in compatibility layers

Choose the computer and displays first, then match the dock, charging, mounts, lighting, and cables. A dock cannot add video modes the laptop does not support, and identical-looking USB-C ports may carry very different data, charging, and display capabilities.

  1. Write down each display’s resolution, refresh rate, input type, and orientation.
  2. Confirm whether the computer supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt, USB4, DisplayLink, or only data and charging.
  3. Check dock power delivery against the laptop’s normal charger requirement.
  4. Verify VESA patterns, monitor weight, desk thickness, and clamp clearance before buying an arm.
  5. Plan reachable ports and cable lengths before attaching everything under the desk.

If two external monitors are the goal, use the dual-monitor dock compatibility guide before choosing a dock family.
