Map the house before buying hardware

Count floors, construction materials, wired rooms, internet speed, and the devices that need dependable latency. A single premium router can still underperform behind masonry or metal; a well-placed mesh system can be better, but wireless backhaul reduces available capacity when nodes cannot use Ethernet.

  • Coverage: place nodes in open, central locations rather than hiding them at the edge of a dead zone.
  • Ports: confirm multi-gig Ethernet where fast internet, NAS storage, or wired backhaul requires it.
  • PoE: total the switch’s power budget—not only its port count—before adding cameras or access points.
  • Security: review update policy, local-storage choices, cloud subscriptions, guest networks, and account recovery.

For most homes, stability and placement matter more than buying the newest wireless label. Use the Wi-Fi 7 versus Wi-Fi 6E guide to decide whether 6GHz and newer client support change the answer.
